Newa: People

It is not surprising that the Newar people were influenced by Tibet and India. What is surprising is your response to this stimulus creativity, which actually led to a true exchange with its giant neighbors. Medieval, near the society has left an architectural and artistic religious heritage that is unique and spectacular by any standard.

Although most Newars have Mongoloid physical characteristics, others not, so its origins are a mystery. It is now generally accepted that are a mixture of many different peoples who were attracted to the valley, possibly originations with Kiratis, or a more striking group even earlier, perhaps feature the Newars’ is his love of community life. Newar houses invariably grouped together, usually around the sites of religious significance. Although its economy is centered around agriculture and trade, they created sophisticated urban communities, serving a range of human needs in an integrated way that has rarely been equaled.



Today there are about 600,000 Newars largely centered in the Kathmandu Valley. Always traders and merchants, Newars continue to fill this role throughout the kingdom. Its proximity to the center of power has also led to them having a disproportionate influence on the bureaucracies of Kathmandu. many now live in ugly heartbreakingly outside the city proper bungalows, and many of its traditions are in decline.
